 Hautboy after Johann Christoph Denner Pitch A = 440 Hz. Stained boxwood. Three pure silver keys. Four vent holes in the bell, allowing a low C#. Two vent holes covered give a low C. The original instrument : Preserved in Museo Correr, Venice, under the n° 34. Stained boxwood, three brass keys. High pitched short instrument. The bell has four vent holes. Made at the very beginning of the XVIIIth century, this instrument could have been played in Venice where the standard pitch was high ; the first Vivaldi concerti for hautboy were composed at this time. Johann Christoph Denner, Jacob Denner’s father, was active in Nürnberg during the last decades of the XVIIth century. He is known to have been one of the first in Germany able and allowed to copy the French woodwinds. |
